Sorrow Engulfs Colorado Springs after Parole Officer is Killed in the Line of Duty

Christine Guerin Sandoval, a parole officer who was tragically killed on duty

The Colorado Springs community is grieving the loss of a dedicated parole officer from the Colorado Department of Corrections. Christine Guerin Sandoval was fatally hit by a car, allegedly driven by a fugitive suspect last Thursday afternoon. The Colorado corrections fraternity came together on Friday to identify the slain officer and share the tragic news.

Mourned and Remembered

Parole Officer Sandoval was not only an esteemed officer but wore many hats as a mother, daughter, and wife. Strong words of tribute were given by Colorado Corrections Chief Andre Stancil who commended Sandoval's bravery in protecting the residents of Colorado. He mourned the fact that Sandoval had lost her life in the line of duty and fulfilling her oath.

Fateful Confrontation

On that fateful day, Sandoval, along with two other parole officers, were serving a warrant in Colorado Springs. The incident occurred in a parking lot near the intersection of North Spruce and Bijou Street, as they attempted to approach the suspect. According to Ira Cronin, the Colorado Springs Police Department's public relations manager, the rogue suspect made a speedy getaway, ramming his car into Sandoval and another officer. Sandoval's life was tragically cut short in the hospital, where she was rushed immediately after the incident, while her injured colleague has since been released and is recuperating at home.

Manhunt and Arrest

A massive search operation led to the embarkment of a 'blue alert' and swift arrest of the suspect, Justin Kula, thanks to tip-offs from the public. Kula, 41, was arrested without resistance in Colorado Springs' Glenview Court neighborhood after a community warning for residents to remain indoors was issued.

Legal Investigations

Multiple charges are being considered against Kula, including manslaughter, abandoning the scene of a fatal accident, and assaulting a peace officer. The formal charges will be determined by the El Paso County District Attorney's office. The District Attorney, Michael Allen, mentioned that all potential charges, even those like murder or homicide, are under consideration.

Community and Authorities React

Mayor Yemi Mobolade expressed sadness, stating that the death of Officer Sandoval lays heavy on the hearts of the Colorado Springs community. He emphasized that this tragic incident underscores the need for more community support for local law enforcement officers. Governor Jared Polis offered condolences to Christine's family and expressed gratitude to the community's parole officers and first responders. The Colorado Springs Police are appealing to anyone with further information to come forward and help in their ongoing investigation into Sandoval's death.
