Biden's Pooch, Commander, Could Join the Front Lines in Ukraine, Suggests Ex-NATO Chief
Commander, the two-year-old German Shepherd and companion of President Joe Biden, has caught the mocking attention of James Stavridis, a former NATO supreme allied commander for Europe. Stavridis light-heartedly suggested that the reportedly aggressive pooch could potentially join efforts against Russia in Ukraine.
Past Incidents with Secret Service Agents
Last month, it was confirmed by Newsweek with a spokesperson from the U.S. Secret Service that an agent had been bitten by Commander. The agent received medical treatment immediately at the complex. This was not an isolated occurrence. Following the incident last month, it was confirmed that another Secret Service officer had been hospitalized the previous November, succumbing to a bite from Commander.
Internal emails obtained by an investigative group also revealed reports of multiple biting episodes involving Commander since his 2021 arrival in the White House, raising concerns about the German Shepherd's behavior.
Commander's Residence at the White House
Recent reports from The New York Times reveal that Commander has been moved out of the White House. Elizabeth Alexander, a spokesperson for first lady Jill Biden, shared that while future steps are being evaluated, Commander is not currently residing in the White House.
It's worth noting that another of Biden's dogs, Major, had been previously removed from the White House following a similar incident. Michael LaRosa, Jill Biden's spokesperson, stated in 2021 that Major would undergo further training to adapt to life in the White House.
Social Media Reactions and Defense
A recent post from Commander's Instagram account, @commanderfirstdog, suggested that the news about Commander's past aggressive instances were merely "puppy tales." In response to this post, numerous social media users defended Commander, with several attributing his behavior to the challenging environment of the White House.
White House officials shared in July that the Biden family has been collaborating with the Secret Service to introduce new training for Commander along with designating zones within the White House's grounds where the dog can roam freely.
The White House has been contacted for further comments regarding Commander's situation.
