Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Set to Leave Democratic Party and Pursue Independent Presidential Run
In a notable political shift, White House aspirant Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is ditching his efforts to go head-to-head against President Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination. Instead, he is set to launch an independent campaign for the presidency, a recent report suggests.
Expected Announcement of Kennedy's Independent Run
The political scion of the iconic Kennedy family reportedly intends to unveil his independent candidacy on October 9 in Philadelphia, as per Mediaite's Friday report. "Bobby feels that the DNC is altering the rules to sideline his candidacy so an independent run is his only choice," disclosed a Kennedy campaign insider to the outlet.
The eminent 69-year-old environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine advocate hinted at a "major announcement" in a video posted on YouTube last Friday where he voiced his criticism of "corruption" within both major political parties.
Kennedy's Approach to the 2024 Presidential Election
"How will we triumph against the entrenched Washington interests?" pondered RFK Jr. during the video. "It's certainly not by playing their game." Officially announcing his 2024 campaign in April, Kennedy has allegedly been considering running as a third-party candidate for several weeks.
Assessing the Viability of RFK Jr.'s Bid
American Values 2024, a super PAC that supports his presidential endeavors, has initiated polling to ascertain his feasibility in a tripartite race against Biden and former President Donald Trump, reports CNN.
In July, RFK Jr. also held a meeting with Libertarian Party Chair Angela McCardle, as documented by The New York Times. However, McCardle acknowledged that he did not commit to running as a candidate representing the Libertarian Party.
Addressing Democratic Party Challenges
Earlier this month, Kennedy Jr. penned an open letter to Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, arguing that he is not receiving a fair chance in his bid to primary the elder incumbent. He contended that the Democratic Party has effectively become a single entity with the Biden campaign.
"Regrettably, our party leaders have succumbed to the temptation of control in recent years," Kennedy Jr. wrote, critiquing his own party's leadership. He further emphasized how these leaders have hijacked the party's machinery, compromising the fundamental democratic principle of equality in voting rights.
Kennedy also chastised the DNC for manipulating the primary calendar, curtailing ballot accessibility in Iowa, and refusing to host a Democratic primary debate. The contender is currently polling at around 15% in national surveys, a substantial lag from Biden's reported preference score of 65%.
