Mayor Adams visits migrants in Ecuador, fails to tell them not to come to NYC

Mayor Adams visits migrants in Ecuador

Mayor Adams' Immigrant Discouragement Tour in Ecuador Takes an Unexpected Turn

During a recent visit to a family shelter in Quito, Ecuador, Mayor Eric Adams made a surprising omission. Despite embarking on an international tour aimed at deterring immigrants from seeking asylum in New York City (NYC), Adams did not advise any of the migrants in the shelter against relocating to the metropolis, according to our investigative report.

Unsettling Silence

Adams spent approximately an hour speaking with ten migrant families in the shelter, a significant part of his Latin American tour designed to dissuade asylum seekers from overburdening NYC. Despite the tour's intentions, immigrant families were taken aback upon realizing Adams' underlying message following a private meeting.

Shelter Employees Surprised

When we visited the Fundación Gotitas de Oblación shelter following Adams' private tour, we found that shelter employees—previously unaware of Adams' purpose— expressed shock at the mayor's migrant discouragement narrative. Instead of focusing on discouraging relocation to NYC, Adams appeared more interested in understanding the services provided by the shelter, including aiding immigrants in finding permanent accommodations and employment.

City Hall's Response

City Hall's spokesperson, Kayla Mamelak, responded by stating that Adams conducted private conversations with migrants, but did not divulge the content of those conversations.

Mayor's Media Drive Misunderstood?

Prior to the mayor's visit, sources indicated that the tour aimed to use local news as a medium for discouraging migrants from travelling to the Big Apple. Nonetheless, during a post-visit press conference, Adams depicted the visit as a "fact-finding" mission aimed at halting the spread of incorrect information to asylum seekers about relocating to the United States

The Bigger Picture

With increasing numbers of asylum seekers arriving daily in New York, the Adams administration seems to be bracing for a potential influx, possibly breaking previous records. Regardless of his apparent failure to discourage migrants specifically in the shelter, it remains to be seen whether Adams' broader strategy will become more explicit, articulating concerns that NYC may be ill-equipped to handle an extensive migration crisis.
