Morgan State Cancels Homecoming Historically Following Campus Shooting

For the first time in its storied history, Morgan State University has made the tough decision to cancel its homecoming celebrations following a shocking shooting incident on campus which harmed five individuals.

Unprecedented Event Sparking Concern

The violent interruption leading to this unexpected action happened after an event held in honor of the university's homecoming within the Baltimore-based school grounds. The event marked the crowning of this year's Mr. and Mrs. Morgan State.

Although all five injured individuals are expected to make a full recovery, the growing concern lies with the culprits behind this horrific act still being in large and the reported incidents of gun violence, particularly around homecoming occasions. This has subsequently led to the university deciding to cancel the majority of homecoming festivities.

The Institutional Response

The university's President, David K. Wilson, in a press statement, expressed a palpable sense of regret at having to arrive at such a momentous decision. "Regrettably, for the very first time in Morgan's history, all activities planned around Homecoming will be either canceled or postponed until the perpetrator(s) of this atrocity have been found and brought to justice," stated Wilson.

The Impact of Canceling Homecoming

Homecoming is considered a significant customary ceremony amongst many Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Beyond welcoming alumni and offering students a mid-term break, this event plays a pivotal role in networking opportunities for students and provides a crucial fundraising window for the institutions, most of which are financially strained.

Ty Couey, the president of the National HBCU Alumni Associations Foundation, praised Wilson's hard decision, pointing out the significant role that education plays over homecoming festivities. More importantly, he emphasized that alumni and supporters' financial contributions during this period would dramatically benefit both the institutions and the local business community.

How Students and Alumni are Reacting

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the Morgan State community, leaving students and alumni with mixed feelings. Sydney Parker, a Morgan State graduate, expressed her desolation with the violence witnessed but commended the school's actions in response to the unfortunate event.

However, some students like Kristopher Jackson, a second-year nursing major at Morgan State, are torn about the decision. Jackson voiced his apprehension, underscoring that homecoming offers a unique blend of networking and enjoyment.

Path Forward

In response to the turmoil, Morgan State has announced the suspension of classes for the remaining week, with counseling services extended to distressed students. The Baltimore Police Department has stated that two individuals are currently sought, in relation to the campus shooting.
